This time, you can vote like the old days in Chicago - vote early and vote often!  Yes, you can buy votes.  In fact, that's the only way your vote will be registered!

$1 for each vote

$5 for each 5 votes (minimum for voting online)

Pick the candidate who you would most like to see kiss a pig, and the person with the most votes will be kissing a live pig at the Josephine County Historical Society's "Pie and Ice Cream Social" on July 27th at 5:00 PM.  The "pig kissing" will take place in the Schmidt House Garden Bandstand, 508 SW 5th Street in Grants Pass.

Three voting locations have been set up:

• online at JoCoHistorical.org
• 512 SW 5th Street (Research Library) - Tuesday through Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM
• Booth Street Self Storage, corner of Booth & E Streets - Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, Saturday from 9 AM to 3 PM

All funds will benefit the Josephine County Historical Society, which is a nonprofit organization totally supported by members and contributions, and receives no government support.

Tickets are just $5 each and the proceeds will benefit the Josephine County Historical Society.

Tickets can be purchased at the Josephine County Historical Society's Research Library at 512 SW 5th Street in Grants Pass (Tuesday - Friday from 10:00am to 4:00pm) or

at Gasoline Alley Antiques located at 310 SW 6th Street in Grants Pass.  You can also take a look at this wonderful Christmas tree while you're there.

The winning ticket will be drawn at the annual "Celebrate Christmas Past" event at the historic Schmidt House Museum on Saturday December 17, 2011.

Your Josephine County Historical Society is totally non-profit.  We do not receive any funding from the state or county, and rely completely on the generosity of our members and benefactors.  Your membership and contributions are our lifeblood.

Pie Trivia

 It is thought that pies were first made by Egyptians during the New Stone-Age, about 9500 B.C.

Animated pies were popular in the 14th century.  The nursery rhyme " four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie," refers to such a pie. According to the rhyme, "When the pie was opened, the birds began to sing."  When the pie was cut into, the birds would actually fly out!  Birds, frogs, and small mammals were also used.

 Cobblers came into creation during the 19th century in the American West.  Westward bound pioneers adapted traditional oven-baked pies to something that could be cooked in a dutch oven.  The earliest reference to a cobbler is from 1839 by The Kentucky Housewife, Lettice Bryan.  She described the pie as; "not fashionable for company, it is very excellent for family use."

For a period in time in Kansas, it was illegal for restaurants to serve ice cream with cherry pie.

 Boston Cream Pie is actually a cake; and cheesecake is actually a pie (tart to be exact).

The Wham-O Frisbee's prototype was a metal pie pan.  The inspiration for this still popular toy came from the Great Depression era when college students entertained themselves by tossing around empty pie plates.
